Potential Delay To Start Of 2019-20 School Year

Potential Delay To Start Of 2019-20 School Year

Dear Delta Community,

We are enthusiastic for the start of the school year and especially eager to welcome our incoming Class of 2023 in the days ahead!  Our staff has been working hard to prepare classes, set goals and priorities for the year, distribute laptops and schedules, and so much more.  We are anxious for students to return and begin the wonderful journey of the 2019-2020 school year

At this time, we want to prepare families for a potential delay of the first day of school. As you may have seen in the news, the Kennewick School District and the Kennewick Education Association are currently in contract negotiations. If a settlement is not reached on or before Monday, August 26th, a teacher strike will occur. We hope both sides will be able to reach an agreement by that deadline and that school will open as scheduled for Freshmen Orientation day on Tuesday, August 27th.

As a tri-district partnership, Delta would close in the event of a KEA strike. We will post an update on Monday, August 26th, via Edmodo, Facebook, and our website at

www.thedeltahighschool.com. You can also watch for additional information on the Kennewick School District website at www.ksd.org.

Should a delay occur, our students will:

·       Still benefit from a freshman orientation day on our first day of school (on a new date);

·       Still complete a full school year, including the opportunity to earn all academic credits and participate in College in the High School;

·       Still have the opportunity to participate in school events, clubs, competitions, and field trips; and

·       Still participate in student-led conferences at the end of Trimesters 1 and 2.

Depending on the length of delay, trimester start/end dates, student-led conference dates, and graduation may need to be adjusted. We will share any revised dates with you as soon as they are determined.

We know a potential delayed start of school is inconvenient to our students, families, and staff.  While this situation is not in our control, at Delta we are 100% committed to providing an outstanding educational experience for all of our students, regardless of the start date to the year. We all hope for a positive and expeditious resolution to bargaining. If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me at mike.johnson@thedeltahighschool.com. We look forward to seeing our Deltonians very soon!

Respectfully,

Michael R. Johnson
